Voysey was one of the most successful and renowned British architects from the 1890s until the outbreak of World War I. His white-rendered houses with stone window dressings and sweeping green slate roofs combined clarity and simplicity with a sensual appreciation of natural materials. Voysey's belief that the house should embody "Quietness in a storm, economy of upkeep, evidence of protection, harmony with surroundings, absence of dark passages" placed him at the heart of the Arts and Crafts movement, while the elongated simplicity of his furniture together with the fluid, undulating curves of his decorative design made him a formative influence on Mackintosh, Van de Velde and the Art Nouveau style. Voysey's conviction that no detail of a house was too small to deserve the attention of its architect led him to design everything from the plan of the garden to the handles on the kitchen dresser. His reputation spread across Europe and America and in the 1930s John Betjeman, Pevsner and others revived his reputation in Britain as a precursor of the Modern Movement. He was awarded the RIBA Gold Medal in 1940 at the age of 83. Since then he has worked as a designer in a professional studio, the architect Joan Guibernau becoming an associate in 1993. In 2001 he was appointed Professor of the Reale Academia Catalana de Belles Artes de Sant Jordi. His major realizations include the residential complex of S. Just Desvern in Barcelona, the extension project for Venice Cemetery and the "Rey Juan Carlos I" hotel in Barcelona. His originality lies in his art of combining modernism with particular features of local architecture. Ferrater's buildings, contrasting with urban realities, highlight the Mediterranean lifestyle. It is in all ways comprehensive: its text is as organized and complete as a set of blueprints; its striking pictures of projects as small as the modest Usonian houses or as grand as the Guggenheim Museum are arranged in order by the visual information they reveal about each project; and even its copyediting is noticeably coherent, with dates just where one expects such details to be, in the first picture captions for each project. The book as a whole is so carefully conceived that, reading it, one knows exactly where to look for any particular bit of history. And while, for casual readers, the essays may offer too much to digest at first, Robert McCarter's prose is agile and passionate. 	» Arhitectura » Arhitecti Gunnar Asplund Although a contemporary of Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier, Gunnar Asplund pursued an architecture that does not fit easily into their view of Modernism as a movement that rejected the applied styles and ornamentation of the nineteenth century. Instead, Asplund was at ease with classical or vernacular elements blending with modernist ideals, and displayed a sensitive understanding of the relationship between architecture and its surrounding landscape. His abilities are amply demonstrated in masterpieces like the Woodland Cemetery. In 1915 Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz won the competition to plan a new cemetery for Stockholm. Their romantic plan, in which a symbolically straight, narrow pathway abruptly curves blindly away into the forest, and with open fields capped by burial-mound-like hillocks, earned both of them further commissions for buildings within the cemetery. Asplund’s Woodland Chapel of 1920 is tucked into the forest and uses classical elements such as Doric columns, but sparingly and in unusual ways, while manipulating scale in ways that further the spiritual and contemplative nature of the building. The Crematorium and Monument Hall of 1935 are dignified and powerful, unornamented but not austere, to offer comfort to those who use them. The Gothenburg Law Courts, another critical work which was finally completed in 1937, shows how Asplund relates the architecture of Modernism to a historical plan and facade. Buildings such as the architect’s own summer house at Stennäs and the crematoria at Kviberg and Skövde, dating from the later part of his life when he had begun to embrace Modernism, still show traditional classical and vernacular influences and are evidence that not all forms of Modernism constituted a fresh start. This will be a comprehensive monograph on Asplund and will include extensive new colour photography as well as many original drawings. 	» Arhitectura » Arhitecti Hitoshi Abe Born in 1962, Hitoshi Abe is widely considered to be one of the most interesting young architects working in Japan today. After obtaining his Master's degree at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, he worked for Coop Himmelb(l)au in their Los Angeles office before obtaining his Ph.D. from Tohoku University and setting up his own practice, Atelier Hitoshi Abe, in 1992. Since then, he has won a wide variety of commissions in Japan. He was identified as one of the key emerging talents in contemporary architecture in 10 x 10, published by Phaidon in 2000. He has also taught at several architecture schools, including the Tohoku Institute of Technology and the University of California Berkeley, and, in 2007, he was made chair of the Department of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of California Los Angeles. Abe is the youngest person ever to hold this position. Abe's architecture is characterized by complex spatial arrangements and a sensitivity to the surrounding environment and the people who will use the building. His Kanno Museum arranges the rooms of the exhibition space around each other in a complex of angled walls and irregular shapes that stem from an abstract geometric concept. The result is a sequence of dynamic rooms that are dependent on each other for their form. In his Miyagi Stadium, Abe shows an awareness of the surroundings, incorporating the structure of the stadium into the contours of the hill, echoing the physical form of the hill in the curves of the stands. Abe's bold architectural plans and ability to master an impressive range of building types mark him out as one of the most promising architects working today.
